Yarok Class Hot Air Balloon Project

Hot Air Balloons

Today our Yarok class had a blast creating amazing mini hot air balloons out of paper mache. Check out this fun project:

Materials:
·         Balloon
·         Paper (newspapers or paper for recycling)
·         White glue
·         Hole punch
·         Applesauce cup
·         Strings
·         Poster paint
·         Paint brushes
·         Palette
·         Scissors
Steps:
1.
Make a paper mache using a balloon as the mold.
The paper mache will dry in 2 to 3 days.
2.
Once the paper mache is completely dry, pop the balloon
inside the paper mache. Remove the bits of balloon latex.
3.
Cut a 2 to 3-inch diameter opening around the air hole end
 of your paper mache.
4.
Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the opening.
5.
Use a pencil or a sharp object to make a small hole at
the top of your paper mache balloon.
6.
Loop one end of a pipe cleaner.
7.
Insert the free end of the pipe cleaner through the bottom
opening of the paper mache. Pull it all the way through the small
hole. The loop on the pipe cleaner serves as a stopper.
8.
Loop the protruding part of the pipe cleaner to create
a handle for your hot air balloon.
9.
Prime your paper mache with white acrylic paint.
Let the paint dry completely.
10.
Think of a nice design for your hot air balloon.
Paint the balloon using poster paint.
11.
Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the rim of the applesauce
cup. The placement of these holes should match those on the paper
mache balloon.
12.
Attach the paper mache balloon to the basket by tying strings
to connect the holes on the balloon to those of the basket.
13.
You may decorate the hot air balloon further with stickers,
craft foam shapes or glitter glue. You can even make paper
dolls to ride in your hot air balloon.

Enjoy!
