Flags For The Fourth Of July

Our campers are very patriotic, check out the beautiful flags they made for the upcoming holiday!

Here's how we did it in case you want to try:

Things needed:
·         Blue, red, and white construction paper
·         A pair of scissors
·         Glue stick
Instructions:
1. Using a pencil, outline stars on one of the sheets of white construction paper. Make them as big or small as your personal preference. Once outlined, use the scissors to cut the stars out of the paper. Set them aside for now.
2. Cut five 1-in. strips from the red construction paper. Cut these strips along the longer 11-in. side of the sheet. Set these aside.

3. From the blue construction paper, cut a square that is 3 in. by 3 in. Set it aside.

4. Take one of the red strips that were previously cut and glue it to the other white sheet of construction paper. Make sure the white piece of paper is lying horizontally and that the long edge of the red strip aligns with the top right side of the white sheet. This is the top.

5. Leaving approximately 1 in. of white showing after the first red strip, glue another red strip on the white paper in the same manner. Continue to glue the rest of the red strips with white showing in between them.

6. At the top left corner of the striped paper, take the blue square and glue it in this space.

7. Glue the white stars you previously cut to the blue square. Let the glue dry and display your flag.

Rainbow Tie Dye Cupcakes

Check out the amazing cupcakes that our threes class made today, yummy!

Here’s how to make them yourself:

Start by whipping up the batter for your favorite vanilla cupcakes. Divide the batter into four separate small bowls.

Tint each bowl with a few drops of food coloring or gel: ex. one red, one blue, one green, one yellow. Try not to over mix your batter here, because you’ll develop a very tough, bread-like cupcake. Incorporate the color in the fewest stirs possible.

Drop spoonfuls of each colored batter into the cupcake liners until they are 3/4 full.

When all the liners are filled, use a toothpick to swirl the batter a few times.Use a clean toothpick for each cupcake so that you keep the colors clean, and don’t swirl too much or you’ll mix the colors into a brown tone.
Extra Tip: Using one finger, push in one edge of the cupcake liner towards the center to make a heart-shaped cupcake.
Bake them according to the instructions on your cupcake recipe.
Pile them with pure white frosting, or you can even try building a mini sandcastle with brown sugar on top. Enjoy!

Yarok Class Hot Air Balloon Project

Hot Air Balloons

Today our Yarok class had a blast creating amazing mini hot air balloons out of paper mache. Check out this fun project:

Materials:
·         Balloon
·         Paper (newspapers or paper for recycling)
·         White glue
·         Hole punch
·         Applesauce cup
·         Strings
·         Poster paint
·         Paint brushes
·         Palette
·         Scissors
Steps:
1.
Make a paper mache using a balloon as the mold.
The paper mache will dry in 2 to 3 days.
2.
Once the paper mache is completely dry, pop the balloon
inside the paper mache. Remove the bits of balloon latex.
3.
Cut a 2 to 3-inch diameter opening around the air hole end
 of your paper mache.
4.
Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the opening.
5.
Use a pencil or a sharp object to make a small hole at
the top of your paper mache balloon.
6.
Loop one end of a pipe cleaner.
7.
Insert the free end of the pipe cleaner through the bottom
opening of the paper mache. Pull it all the way through the small
hole. The loop on the pipe cleaner serves as a stopper.
8.
Loop the protruding part of the pipe cleaner to create
a handle for your hot air balloon.
9.
Prime your paper mache with white acrylic paint.
Let the paint dry completely.
10.
Think of a nice design for your hot air balloon.
Paint the balloon using poster paint.
11.
Punch 4 evenly-spaced holes around the rim of the applesauce
cup. The placement of these holes should match those on the paper
mache balloon.
12.
Attach the paper mache balloon to the basket by tying strings
to connect the holes on the balloon to those of the basket.
13.
You may decorate the hot air balloon further with stickers,
craft foam shapes or glitter glue. You can even make paper
dolls to ride in your hot air balloon.

Enjoy!
